7 things forbidden to Hausa Culture and Tradition

The Hausa culture and tradition are unique in its own way. Most of the Hausas in the Northern part Nigeria are nearly Muslims, and there are 14 states in Nigeria that are Muslim-dominated by Hausa with their culture and tradition.

Plateau State is mostly Christian and not considered a central Hausa state and Kaduna State which has equivalent numbers of Christian-Muslim populations. Some of these Hausa States that portray this Hausa culture and tradition are Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Gombe, Bornu, Plateau, Adamawa, and Yobe among others.

Naturally, a Hausa man based on his Hausa culture and tradition would consider as taboo what the Islamic Quran forbids, and these things should not be done anywhere you find yourself in Hausa land or northern part of Nigeria or you might offend them.

  • Eating pork or consuming swine products

    In Hausa culture, it is considered haram to eat pig meat or consume any pig products in Hausa land because the pig is being seen as something filthy according to the Quran. The same thing goes for eating dog meat in Hausa land, except you are in Jos, Plateau State where it is considered a major delicacy among the Birom and other ethnic tribes in the state.

  • Alcohol is forbidden

    Consumption of Alcohol openly is prohibited in Hausa land, and also Sharia law has made this a very big taboo in Hausa culture and tradition. Consumption of alcohol such as gin, whiskey, beer, and other alcoholic beverages are prohibited in northern Nigeria; unless you purchase and consume it in your own secrecy.

  • Wearing of gold and silk for men

    Hausa culture and tradition forbids men to wear gold jewelry and silk apparel. It is only the women who are allowed to use gold ornaments and wear silk apparel. It is only Yoruba men in southwest Nigeria and Igbo men in southeast Nigeria may wear gold ornaments and even silk apparel.

  • Scantily-dressed or half-nude females

    Women are expected to dress properly and fully covered up themselves. According to the orders of their religion, scantily-dressed or half-nude females would kick against their Hausa culture and tradition. You are not allowed to expose delicate parts of your body to public glare as a woman, or even be too forward with men openly.

  • Depicting Prophet Muhammed in the art form

    The Quran teaches that God created man in His image. It is a big crime in Hausa culture and tradition to represent humans or God or the Prophet Muhammad in symbolic drawings or any form of art because this is considered disrespect to God.

  • Sexual education and freedom prohibited

    Sexual freedom is forbidden in many occasions, and so is open sexual education. Sodomy, gay relationships, lesbianism, fornication between unmarried persons, adultery, and some forms of sexual positions are forbidden in Hausa culture and tradition. For instance, even married couples are not approved to practice anal sex, penetration from behind, or sex during a woman’s menstruation.

  • Urinating in the upright position

    Men in other states urinate while they standing erect on their two feet, the Hausas men prefer squatting as they urinate. This is the traditional way for a Hausa man to urinate and they regard it as the standard for all males in their states. You might offend their sensibilities if you remain standing while urinating; while women must not be sighted urinating anywhere in public even though this can be witnessed in other parts of Nigeria.
