Omawumi Megbele popularly known by just her first name (and stage name) is a Nigerian singer, song writer and actress who was launched into limelight after emerging runner-up on the TV reality show West African Idols. She is also a brand ambassador for Globacom, Konga.com and Malta Guinness.

Background Family

Omawumi was born on the 13th of April, 1982 to the family of Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele. She attended Nana Primary School and went on to the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. She proceeded to study law and Ambrose Alli University and graduated in 2005. Then she moved to Port Harcourt to work at “O.S Megbele & Associates”- a law firm owned by her family.

Omawumi is married to Toyin Yusuf.

Rise to Prominence

Omawumi’s took a different career path when she signed up to contest on the TV reality show- Idols West Africa in 2007. After she emerged 1st runner up she pursued a full career in music and so far it has been a huge success for her. Her collaborations with other already established musicians like P-Square, 2face, D’banj, Banky W and M.I also gave her career a huge boost. She has two albums under her belt so far- Wonder Woman and Lasso of truth.

Seeing how successful her music career was, Omawumi also delved into acting. In 2009 she played a minor role in the edition of the V-Monologues and also starred in the musical play Olurombi. Omawumi also had a minor role in the movie Inale. And then in 2011 she starred in Funke Akindele’s Return of Jenifer and also starred in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold in 2013 alongside veteran actor Majid Michel and musician Ice Prince.

She was nominated for the “Best Female Artist” award at the ELOY Awards in 2014.
