ICAN which is an acronym for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria was established in Nigeria by the Act of Parliament No.15 of 1965. The main function of the organization is to regulate and set standards for the practice of Accountancy Profession in Nigeria.
All Accountants in the country are required to meet and abide by these set standards to successfully undertake Accountancy profession in Nigeria.

For anyone to become an accountant or practice accountancy in the country, he/she must pass through the lens of ICAM which would validate the skills and knowledge of such professed accountant. Besides these evaluative/vetting functions, ICAN establishes and maintains the registry of fellows, associates, and accountants in the country.

About ICAN Examinations
Two professional exams are offered by ICAN in Nigeria namely the professional examinations and the Accounting Technician Scheme exams.
The first professional examination is for the holders of bachelor’s degrees or Higher National Diplomas in any discipline and holders of ICAN AAT qualification.
The second professional examination if the Accounting Technician Scheme exam and is for persons who do not hold tertiary institution degrees or diplomas. These include persons who have obtained five Ordinary Level credits (Mathematics and English included) at two sittings or less.
