The journey to what Andela is today did not certainly start in a day. It took the collaboration of Ian Carnevale, Nadayar, Brice, and Iyinoluwa Aboyeji. They came together and founded Fora. Fora was a distance learning platform for African universities. After a while, they reached out to Jeremy Johnson. This was because of the similarities between his company at the time, 2U, and what they were hoping to build in Africa.

The trio realized in early 2014, that Fora was not working out as expected. They were in dire straits and were unable to raise the capital needed. They did not also have the political networks to sail through several regulatory barriers they faced.

After an extended period with nothing to show and having spent time chasing elusive investors in Nigeria, they were finally able to raise a small round from Extreme Startups currently Highline. VC. The fund was small, but it helped get them back on track. Having gotten a little money, they had two options — pivot Fora before the cash ran out or die.

At this juncture, they decided to contact Jeremy again to seek his advice. At the moment, he had just gotten back from a trip to Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of the trip was to give a talk for the MasterCard Foundation. He had been invited by Christina Sass, who is now one of Andela’s co-founders. While there, he was thinking of methods an individual can scale high-quality education without charging tuition.

They fiddled around a few rough ideas and he took them through an idea that eventually became Andela. He promised to personally fund them and join their board if they were willing to consider it. The team loved and were awed by the model, though it was risky. They eventually discovered that the new model was even more aligned with their mission to empower young Africans to take back the continent through education. They excitedly called Jeremy and expressed interest. Jeremy found out that he could not stop thinking about Andela and told them that if they were interested, he would leave 2U to co-found the company with them and lead it on a day-to-day basis.

Andela talent network officially began in Nigeria, Lagos precisely on the 21st of May 2014. The address was in a vacant duplex at 33c Cameron Road Ikoyi, Lagos. The company was a coalition of different individuals from different walks of life, coming together to create magic for Africa and in Africa. They were two Nigerians – Nadayar and Iyinoluwa, two Americans -Christina and Jeremy Johnson, one Canadian -Ian Carnevale, and one Cameroonian -Brice.
