Application For the Ongoing M100 Young European Journalists Workshop 2019

The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop (M100YEJ) is part of the prestigious annual international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium (M100SC), celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

The workshop is aimed at a young generation of journalists and journalists from Europe, the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) and Russia. In addition to imparting practical and theoretical knowledge on journalistic work, the aim is to establish long-term networking between the participants.

For the fifteen journalists from the countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia, the workshop is often the first opportunity to get to know a Western European country. At the same time, the ten European participants often do not yet know journalists from countries with limited freedom of expression. The exchange thus provides a unique opportunity to get to know the different conditions and challenges of journalism in different political and social systems.

Topic 2019: ” Reading in the Digital World – Innovative Journalism “

The media industry around the world has gone through a time of unprecedented change. The paper’s sustainability debate is omnipresent and publishers need to find new and innovative ways to communicate their news content in a timely manner. Digital developments open up a new dimension: from chat apps to data journalism, VR, to automation or drone journalism. The text-based model may have worked successfully in print for years, but digital journalism requires a new language and new ways of narrative construction. At the same time, a strong emphasis on technology, platforms and algorithms could negatively impact the quality of the content and core mission of journalism, the transmission of verifiable information.

The workshop “Reading in the Digital World – Innovative Journalism” deals with various concepts of digital transformation in media organizations and discusses the role of print in the digital news world. As technological development brings new risks, the limits of innovative and digital journalism are also discussed.

The M100YEJ workshop enables an international and interdisciplinary networking of participants from different European countries and thus offers the unique opportunity to initiate own cross-border media projects. To this end, young journalists have the opportunity to present their projects to potential donors who could act as funding partners or provide feedback.

At the end of the workshop, the young journalists will participate in the international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium in Potsdam, which will bring together high profile public figures as well as senior editors, commentators and media owners in Europe to discuss the role and impact of the media in international affairs evaluate and promote democracy and press freedom.
